Cloud-as-a-Service Deciphering The Cloud

About The Author

The author of CloudasaService.co.uk is me, Paul Young.

I have worked in IT for a number of years, and my experience spans the evolution of technology throughout this period, which includes Digital VMS, which introduced virtualisation early on with it's VMS architecture and clustered file system; Unix and Linux administration; block, file, object and backup data storage technologies; private and public Cloud adoption and design; and Open Source.

I have held senior technical positions at BNP Paribas, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Goldman Sachs, and a technical lead on key projects including a private Cloud at Ocado Technology.

As a leader of regional teams within global organisations, I attempted where possible to improve efficiencies through innovation.

I am currently a freelance Technology Architect, using my experience to evangelise (horribly pretentious word!) and adopt the latest in software defined architectures, and DevOps methodologies and Cloud principles. The combination of these can transform any enterprise IT strategy by introducing a hybrid approach to IT which avoids the inevitable Cloud service provider 'lock in'.

The high cost legacy and bespoke vendor architectures are being replaced by the lower cost, software defined and Open Source alternatives. Of course Public Cloud is a 'game changer', and is revolutionising IT. It's great stuff, it all works, and delivers all of the future proofing and scalability needed for any enterprise.

But whether you commit to a public, private or hybrid approach is another thing altogether, and this site is designed to help address that dilemma.

I am currently designing Cloud environments to support public, private and hybrid strategies. The flexibility and agility that the Cloud operating model offers to an enterprise is vast, and it shouldn't be assumed that a public Cloud service provider is best placed to deliver your Cloud to you. This all requires a different approach to infrastructure design that is no longer hardware focused.

As a demonstration of some of the subjects covered here on CloudasaService.co.uk, this site, albeit small, has been built using an enterprise web framework; employs a GitLab CI/CD pipeline; is running (deployed) in public Cloud; has been designed around microservices and is containerised; uses a content delivery network to avoid latency for static files; has all static files stored in Cloud object storage; and is fully portable between service providers!

I am a certified AWS Solutions Architect, and always available to discuss any aspect of this site and Cloud services.
